LOCKERBIE FELLOWS
Our relationship with Syracuse University is unique and deeply meaningful. It was formed following the tragic events of December 1988, when Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed over Lockerbie, resulting in the loss of 270 lives, including 35 Syracuse University students and 11 Lockerbie residents. In the years since, both communities have worked closely together to ensure that remembrance is matched with education, friendship and positive action for future generations.
Building on this longstanding connection, Syracuse University and Lockerbie Academy have recently launched the Lockerbie Fellows Programme, a new initiative designed to further strengthen academic, cultural and community links between our two communities.
What is the Lockerbie Fellows Programme?
Beginning in 2026, the programme will see a group of ten S6 Lockerbie Academy pupils travel to Syracuse University each year to take part in the University’s annual Remembrance Week. During this visit, pupils will:
- Participate in commemorative and educational events honouring those affected by the 1988 tragedy
- Engage with university students, staff and the wider Syracuse community
- Develop a deeper understanding of global citizenship, service and shared community values
- Coordinate events in Lockerbie to share their experience and share the impact this relationship has had on them
The programme reflects Syracuse University’s commitment to maintaining a strong relationship between our communities and ensuring that remembrance continues to inspire learning and collaboration.
How will pupils be selected?
Fellows will be chosen through a school selection process. Pupils will be expected to demonstrate:
- Strong commitment to learning and personal achievement
- Strong academic ability (pupils must be on track to achieve a minimum of 5 Level 6 (Higher) qualifications by the end of S6)
- Positive contribution to school life and community values
- Leadership potential and responsible citizenship
- An understanding of the historical significance of the Lockerbie–Syracuse relationship
This opportunity aligns closely with our school vision of developing confident, respectful and ambitious young people who are prepared to contribute positively to the wider world.
Why this matters for Lockerbie Academy
The Fellows Programme is not only an international learning experience; it is an important part of our wider work in:
- Raising attainment and aspiration
- Developing leadership and wider achievement opportunities
- Promoting global awareness and cultural understanding
- Strengthening young people’s confidence, resilience and sense of belonging
It allows our pupils to act as ambassadors for Lockerbie, continuing a partnership that has existed for more than three decades and has helped generations of young people build lasting educational and personal connections.
