Through the study of Geography young people develop their knowledge of natural forces on our planet and how people use the planet’s resources in both a positive and negative way. They also extend their understanding of people actions and the impact this can have. We aim to increase young people’s awareness of current environmental, social and economic issues in the Scotland, UK and abroad. We encourage people to think about how these issues might affect them and how they can become involved.

Topics 

1. Volcanoes and Super Volcanoes - the causes and impact of volcanoes and strategies used to minimise the impacts.
2. Land use conflict - we look at issues from national to local level such as how the old Lockerbie Academy should be developed, fracking and a 3rd runway for Heathrow.
3. Hurricanes - by comparing examples in developed and developing countries.
4. Oceans - issues such as coral reefs and plastic pollution
5. Applying map skills to tasks such as siting a music festival
