Music Performance Skills

Continuing from S1, Learners in S2 will undertake technical skills development on two instruments of their chosing from the list below. They will continue to work on developing their individual musicianship, in addition to taking part in whole class performance opportunities.

  • Keyboard
  • Ukulele
  • Tuned Percussion
  • Any orchestral instrument on which they receive private tuition

Understanding Music

Unit 5: Musicals & The Human Voice (Aug-Sept)

In this part of the course we will be studying the world of Musical Theatre and learning all about the human voice. Learners will also develop their Perfomance Skills using materials aimed at Level 3 or 4 featuring songs from Musicals and Movies.

Skills and Knowledge gained will be:

  • Enhanced aural identification of musical elements
  • Knowledge of voice types
  • Understanding of word setting
  • Knowledge of vocal textures
  • Identifying types of songs
  • Elements of Musical Theatre

Unit 6: Halloween Movie Project (Oct)

In this unit learners will gain experience of working with Mixcraft to create a short Film soundtrack project with sound effects based on an animated Halloween themed clip.

Skills and Knowledge gained will be:

  • Setting up a DAW
  • Using an editing timeline
  • Importing and exporting video/audio
  • Clipping and alligning audio
  • Balancing audio volumes
  • Applying automation

Key Meta Skills Learners will utilise in this Unit:

  • Adapting
  • Communicating
  • Collaborating
  • Sense-making

Unit 7 & 8: World Music & Samba Composition (Nov-Dec)

In this part of the course we will be studying music from around the world and the cultural influences of various styles. Learners will also develop their Perfomance Skills using materials aimed at Level 3 or 4 featuring styles of Music from around the world.

Skills and Knowledge gained will be:

  • Enhanced aural identification of musical elements
  • Knowledge of Indian, African, Latin and Caribbean Music
  • Understanding of cross-rhythms and syncopation
  • Enhancing knowledge of musical note values
  • Developing Composition skills

Key Meta Skills Learners will utilise in this Unit:

  • Focusing

  • Creativity
  • Sense-making

Unit 9: Music Tech Animation Project (Jan)

In this unit learners will gain experience of working with Mixcraft to create the soundtrack to a short animate clip. They will source and add their own sound effect to create their idea of how to clip should sound.

Skills and Knowledge gained will be:

  • Using an editing timeline
  • Importing and exporting audio
  • Clipping and alligning audio
  • Balancing audio volumes
  • Applying automation & EQ

Key Meta Skills Learners will utilise in this Unit:

  • Adapting
  • Communicating
  • Collaborating
  • Sense-making

Unit 10: 20th & 21st Century Groups & Styles (March-April)

In this part of the course we will be studying music in a variety of genres from the 20th & 21st Centuries as well as Scottish traditional music and the common/unique features of each style. Alongside this Learners will develop their Practical skills on their two chosen instruments using a selection of Modern Pop & Rock songs aimed at Level 3 or 4.

Skills and Knowledge gained will be:

  • Enhanced aural identification of musical elements
  • Knowledge of Pop, Rock, Country, Rap, Scottish and Orchestral Groups
  • Understanding of Electronic Sound Effects
  • Enhancing knowledge of musical note values
  • Developing Composition skills
  • Working collaboratively towards a shared Performance goal.

Unit 11: Independent Project (May-June)

Here Learners will be given Personalisation and Choice to choose from a variety of projects relating to Music and Music Industry. They will be able to further explore thier abilities in Performance, work with Music Tehcnology to learn basic recording and Copyright skills, or work on Design and Marketing aspects for Music and Media.

Skills and Knowledge gained will be:

  • Further development and understanding of their chosen instrument
  • Increased understanding of microphones, signal paths and Music Copyright
  • Development of their creative and business skills through independent creation and promotion of a brand
